Product Review
Product Description

Optima Pro Attache USB 2.0 Flash Drive was designed with Windows Vista in mind and works in conjunction with SuperFetch intelligent caching to enhance system performance for quicker startup and windows multi-tasking. You can get a boost in system responsiveness without upgrading internal components such as processors or RAM. You can define the amount of storage you want to allocate toward ReadyBoost and how much you want to use for traditional storage, so Optima Pro Attache still makes a great solution to capture, store, and share digital images, music, games and documents.

Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: Exactly what it's supposed to be 2008-10-11
Comment: This is my second PNY flash drive, and I bought it as an upgrade from a 512 MB model that still works flawlessly after five or six years. This one is smaller -- about the size of an ordinary pinky finger, where the old one was about the size of an index finger. Unlike the old one, the cap now fits on the tail end of the stick, making it harder to lose. In terms of functionality, the 8 GB model now has the "readyboost" feature, but beyond that, it works the same, and a month of steady use has gone without a hitch on both Windows XP and Vista computers (I haven't tried it yet on a Mac).

I have allocated 4gb to the "readyboost" feature on my Vista computer. This slows down its initial response time when I plug it into that computer (it takes maybe 5 seconds to recognize the drive, instead of 2), but it's very fast after that. I can't tell that the readyboost feature is improving my computer's processing speed, but it might help more on a slower computer.

Some users have complained that once they allocate space to readyboost, they can't change it, but it's actually easy to do -- just right-click on the drive on your desktop (or in your folders) and click "properties." There's a tab there to change your readyboost allocation. Others have complained that it feels cheap or fragile, but I honestly have no idea what they mean. Mine seems solidly built.

In addition to these drives, I use PNY SD cards in my digital camera, and so far, every PNY product I've bought works exactly as advertised. In my view, they offer the best ratio of price to value (meaning both quality and memory size) in flash memory. Highly recommended.

Summary: Love it, love it, love it! 2008-09-27
Comment: Hi --
Love it, love it, love it!
My cat took off with the cap to my 8GB. I think it went down an air vent.

Please send 2 caps in case it happens again.

Thanks so much!

Comment: Items was exactly what I was looking for, enough space for everything I need to move between work and home. I love PNY drives I have had sizes from 256 MB to 4 GB, and they perform great.

Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: The NEWER version of "Attache" 2008-07-12
Comment: Maybe some of the other reviews were of the OLDER version, which might account for some of the problems reported here and on other sites (?). Mine looks just like the picture here on the Amazon listing, and includes "P-FD8GBATT2-FS" printed above the UPC on the packaging. After quite a bit of reading online, and based on a little experience with USB flash drives, here are some reasons I chose this particular one:

-- huge capacity
-- appears to be very fast, though I have not formally tested it.
-- even though I do not plan to use it for "Ready Boost", I wanted a drive that met the speed and quality requirements anyway. My current PC's run on Windows XP (so RB is a non-factor for me), and if/when I get a 'puter that runs on Vista, I'll make sure it has plenty of RAM. (BTW, I might just skip Vista and wait for their next OS.)
-- about a quarter-inch shorter than the older Attache version, and classier looking, in my opinion.
-- green LED light that lights/blinks when drive is busy... the light is under the blue plastic near the end with the USB connector, and it is not too bright or distracting, compared to some other drives. BTW, as PNY and some other flash drive makers warn (in their packaging and on their website), do not remove the drive while it's in use (light is lit or blinking) or the drive could be ruined (MAYBE repairable with their downloadable "low level format" utility). Check out PNY's website for other various info... FAQ, etc.
-- cap snaps on very firmly and would not fall off on its own, so if someone complains about the cap sliding off easily, they're probably reviewing the older version.
-- encased by lightweight plastic, but like with many drives, if you're reasonably careful, it seems like it will be durable enough.

As people are probably more likely to write a review if they've had a problem, I figure this drive deserves a better average review than it has gotten so far. But I just bought it and have barely used it, so only time will tell. Anyway, 8 gigs for such a low price... seems like not a big risk. Regardless of which model of flash drive you use, of course have the data stored in more than one place/drive/disk.

One last thing: I had my search narrowed down to this drive and the similarly sized and priced Sandisk. However, after doing a google search on "U3 smart" I decided that even though it's very good for some people, I just didn't need or want it, even though there is a way to clear it from the Sandisk drive if I wanted all the space simply for storage, etc.
